Will be purchasing a nice Flat screen tv. Looking for a model of over 50 inches. I know very little about the latest technology.

What features and characteristics should I be looking when choosing which Flatscreen to purchase?

According to Consumer Reports get the Sony Bravia KDL-52NX800 which is the top rated one.

For Plasma get the Samsung PN58C550 which is rated even higher than the Sony.

Zeeman.

I just bought a 58" Samsung Plasma. THe best TV going for plasma like KON said. THere are a couple of different things to look for.

1) 1080p (tru hi def) Most tv's are 1080p but some still kicking out 720p. HUGE difference, get the 1080p
2) 120hz Try to get at least 120hz. They make 240hz TVs now but might be a little overkill. 120hz looks great, 240hz just a little better. Basically the speed of the processor of the image. Will make a difference in hi speed action, especially sports.
3) Make sure when you are comparing TV's you get the model numbers right. A lot of manufacturers don't change the look of the TV they sell, but it may be a much different quality TV from the identical looking one next to it.

For example, a Samsung 600 series (6000 series for Plasma) is a much better TV than the 500 series. The 700 and 800 (3D) is basically the same as the 600, but the speakers are different.

4) Make sure you get AT LEAST 3 HDMI inputs. Most are going with 4 HDMI inputs now (HDMI gives you the BEST quality picture as the cable handles data very well).
5) Most TV's have a PC input now as well, which allows you to hook your laptop up to the TV and watch whatever is on the laptop. Great feature to have, especially if you dont have NFL NEtwork.

ANyway, thats about it. Im not sold on the 3d TV's yet, waste of money if you ask me. www.slickdeals.net has GREAT tv's very cheap, just gotta catch the deal at the right time.

Oh, and don't be afraid to order through off name companies (such as US Appliance). The warranty comes from the company (Samsung, Sony) itself. You will save a good deal of $ and as long as the set comes in ok, makes NO difference. Keep the box a couple of weeks until you make sure you like it and it works properly. You usually have to return the set in original packagin to keep the warranty from being voide if anything is wrong.

PM if you have any questions.
